Cake...

It was my friend, Jen Tong's birthday. So, I made her a cake. I really liked the stewed apricots that I made before, so I wanted to incorporate them into her cake. I also liked the rum cake that I made for Easter. So, I brought all those recipes together and made an stewed-apricot-saffron-infused-rum-almond cake. I mixed the remaining liquid from the apricots with saffron-infused rum for a glaze. (It currently is in the fridge soaking up all the yummy juices.)

You are so inventive and put many female cooks to shame. For real! You are a great cook I think! My Father was like that such a good cook and my bro. Some people are juat real naturals like you! I still say a cookbook in the works? x

Hey Janet,

Thanks for your kind words.

I don't think the gender of the person preparing the food really has anything to do with the results if the person is passionate about food or cares about the people they are making it for. I think nowadays, particularly, it's diminutive to say that she's a good "female painter" or he's a good "male cook" or she's a good "woman pilot". I'd like to think that we are all capable of amazing and beautiful things despite our gender, race, creed, or sexual orientation. We are all equally afforded the opportunity to aspire to anything we hope for.

But with all that said, thanks again for your kind words. I am honored to be included in the esteem of your father and brother.

And... one of these days I'll get a cookbook put together. I'd like to do one where all the recipes mark a time in my life or are embodied by people I've known. Since I've never been formally trained, I still hold a lot of nostalgia towards where I learned something and who I've learned it from. Food for me is another way of showing that you care – it's another way to express yourself. It's a ritual that goes back to the dawn of time, linked in memory that runs deep.
