Field Trip...

After I finished up my exam, I decided to go on a little field trip to Coney Island. Above is a picture of the box lunch that I prepared for myself. It included a few medjool dates, Smyrna figs, half a Bartlett pear, some herb focaccia, bresaola, a sheep's milk cheese, and a little bit of prosciutto. I garnished it with some spiral-shaped slices of guava paste.

One reason I went was to regenerate and psychically recuperate. However, Coney Island isn't what it used to be. Much of it seems desolate and has a sense of death to it. But it was a beautiful (chilly and windy) day and I had of fun going out there.

That's a beautiful lunch!

Coney Island was never a favorite place for me. Sheepshead Bay used to be nice to walk around, good food, too, and I went to college around the other side of the bay at Kingsboro CC. The campus is really nice and peaceful, right on the ocean though not directly exposed to the open ocean. I think the campus used to be open to anyone walking in, though it might have changed. When I really needed to recharge I'd go to Breezy Point, very quiet and empty, at least off season, but it's not accessible by train.
For all the desolation, the sea air must have felt good.
Astrologically, things have been pretty heavy. Next week should start to feel better in some ways.

Your photos are great. We always went to Coney Island every spring. This is in the late 50's. My father loved the Aquarium, so we went there first. Then we would go on the rides and up and down the boardwalk. Once a kid grabbed a hunk of my cotton candy and ran off. My father chased him down--I don't think my dad wanted to get it back to actually let me EAT it, but he wasn't about to let a kid do that to his daughter! I was thrilled by this scene and that is why I remember it.

The bumpercars were cool. The gruff man that ran them (not a "looker") was missing his hand, and smoked a cigarette by using a rubber band to hold it on his stump. Yikes. !!! That tower in your pics was called the Parchute drop, I think, and worked when I was little. So did the two giant wooden roller coasters, and we went on them.

It is a beautiful lunch, but Coney Island is also about Nathans - whether you eat hot dogs or not, the fried are worth the price of admission. Coney Island has ALWAYS been in the death throes of something. I remember the Wild Mouse - which would probably be illegal today, and catching the brass ring on the carousel and the Love Tunnel and the frightening roller coasters, and the swinging chairs (talk about scary) and the Baby Animal place where you could play with puppies and kittens and baby chicks. Again, all illegal today I'm sure. Yes, recharge your batteries at Breezy Point but there is nothing like Coney Island for remembering.

Such great memories! I feel deprived, having been born and grown up there, but never experienced Coney Island in that way. Thanks, jean and auntie mim, for sharing those memories, and Andrew for starting it all ;-).

Last fall, Sheila and I went out to Coney Island. It was still open then and we even had the mandatory Nathan's. It was pretty good, but both of us weren't used to the processed meat and it wasn't such a good train ride home. Lots of belly-hurting.

There is a particular energy there though. I don't think anyone will be able to take that away. It is just sleeping now...
