Miserable Beauty...

A new wrench has been thrown in to thwart my efforts to return home – SNOW! It started snowing last night and hasn't stopped.

Yesterday it looked like the above photo on the left. Today it looks like the above photo on the right. The Star Deck is coated in at least five inches of snow! As many of you know, I'm not the biggest fan of snow.

Sure, it can be beautiful, but it's a miserable beauty. The cold makes my bones ache and my head throb. So, it looks as though we're stuck in the house for awhile until the snow lets up.

I have been enjoying the patterns that the branches make, heavy with snow in a pencil-line tracery of gray against white.

Another nice thing is that we've all been enjoying watching the birds at the feeders. I am glad that we have food out for them. I imagine that it requires a great deal of fuel to fly. So it is nice that they have an oasis in the sea of white, to stop and feed for awhile without worry.

Very austere but so much beauty in the barren wintertime, which causes one to dream of an eternal spring!

We have our own "miserable beauty" here in WI...never heard it coined quite that way before! I am glad that you have a refuge to be in with family and loved ones... and that you can find beauty through the misery! That truly is the root of all inspiration! Enjoy the day, Andrew. Erin

Ugh, Andrew, I feel your pain. When it snows so much I can feel myself withering inside, feeling defeated, and yet still admiring the beauty that such a loathsome substance can create. (very dramatic, I know, but the cold does that to me)

I feel for you but am glad that you have family to be with(and those children are so adorable). The snow hit Richmond too and pretty much the whole route my son had to drive from IL with my grandkids so now I shall to wait until after Christmas to see them. Enjoy your family.

While your photos are beautiful, I fully understand how you feel...I'm sure a mistake was made when I was born in the north...most definitly should have been in the Caribbean or at the very least Florida!!!

Enjoy your time with your family!
Cheers

That picture of the branches is so hauntingly eerie, yet beautiful at the same time.

You've summed up my feelings about snow perfectly. I love it... in photos and on the mountains around the city.

(my word captcha is cling! like the snow on the branches!)

The pictures are glorious!

I live in Minnesota so add below zero temps to all that snow and ice. I love it. I'm a runner and I run outside all year round. The colder the better. I'm a true Minnesotan.

Go outside and make a snowperson with jewelry and a top hat.

I love snow. From a safe, warm distance. I remember being very, very cold (I am actually from DC) and that driving in it was super scary - mainly because of other drivers (Colorado). But it is the cold that really gets me. I second your sentiment of being too cold and miserable.

Again, thinking happy thoughts for you.

the snow is beautiful, i too love the third photo.
i'm a southern california girl and i'll be moving to TN next year and i'm a little worried about the cold winters. although it doesn't snow much there, anything below 50 is too cold for me.

The shot of the twisting branches is stunning.
