Something dawned on me the other day –
I hadn't turned on the TV in months. For a couple of years, I actually didn't have a television. It didn't make sense at the time since I rarely was at home anyway, but now that I'm home constantly, one would think that the television would be on ad infinitum. (One of my very first purchases when I struck out on my own and moved to New York
was a small TV with a built in VCR.) But since the discovery of
Hulu, my television has been collecting dust. Why watch regular TV when I can enjoy some of my favorite shows, both old and new, with limited commercial interruption? Not only that, but
Hulu supports so many worthy charities and causes.
Whether or not I was watching the TV or not, the cable bill still came every month. Just because I wasn't watching it, didn't mean I wasn't getting charged for it. I guess I was afraid of losing some kind of security blanket. But a quick mental tally of how much money would be saved over the span of a year made me hand over the cable box gladly. A $600 a year security blanket in my mind wasn't worth it.
So, farewell, my television!

Idren Andrew,
I applaud your decision and the courage to follow thru.

Good for you, Andrew!
Awesome! I have a tv & DVD player so I can rent out DVD's here and there. I can't watch TV and create, I get too wrapped up in the tv show plus it is nice having extra money to bead!

Great move. I think I might be right behind you when my DirecTV contract is up this fall. All I ever watch is Law and Order anyway, the DVD sets are a hella better deal.
I gave up TV nine years ago, and I haven't missed it for a nanosecond.
Strangely enough, I've been going through nearly the same thought process--we don't have cable right now, and I haven't missed it a bit. I've been overdosing on reruns through Hulu and stuff on YouTube, and I've only used the TV for my DVDs. I'm hoping that I can get a high-speed internet connection through Comcast without having to get cable, and that will save some money. Because if I can go for four months without cable, then clearly I didn't need it that much, right? lol.
I am another long time no TV person. Too much crafting to do. No cable bill. No commercials. Webisodes if there is something you really want to watch. It's all good.
You get used to the weird looks when people ask if you have seen this or that and you say no, I don't have a television. I get the impression that the whole concept is like a form of exotic torture to some folks. :-)
