Shine On...

I recently became aware of a "book review" left for Barbara Lewis' book, Torch-Fired Enamel Jewelry: A Workshop in Painting with Fire.  I am reluctant to call it a "book review" because it seems more like the disgruntled venting of someone deeply insecure.  What is it with people who use the internet as their playground of negativity?  They can only throw stones instead of building something with them.

Here's what I think about the book... it's a beautiful, intelligent, and inspiring resource.  I constantly refer to it and recommend it highly.  And here's what I think about the author.... Barbara is a patient, thorough, and generous teacher who goes above and beyond to make sure that her students understand the concepts and can utilize them in a practical way.  She is honest, sincere, and truly a good person.  She has been nothing but supportive of those in her community and her craft.  Without hesitation, I can fully endorse her and her technique.  Shine on, Barbara!

totally agree about negative comments. While I support people's rights to give honest constructive criticism, some people clearly just have either bad manners or such low self esteem that they feel tearing others down is the only way to make them feel better about themselves. We should celebrate the talents of others, and there willingness to share and teach the rest of us.

I agree. Her "review" was not only a personal attack but at times unintelligible. I commented as such on Amazon!

I fully believe in freedom of speech and the right to express an opinion honestly... however... just because we have the right to be assholes, doesn't mean we should be. If a review ABOUT THE BOOK isn't constructive or helpful in the purchasing process, it should be taken down. If it's some random tangent about the author and doesn't really have to deal with the book, it should be removed. Another negative review (left today!) said Barbara was begging for good reviews... when that's clearly not the case. She requested people leave a good review if they feel the book warranted it! There's a difference. Not only that, but there's over 200 positive reviews! The comment went on to say that it's all her friends and students leaving good reviews. If they are indeed all her friends and students, then I'm even more proud of Barbara... it just goes to further show what a kind and sincere person she is and what an excellent teacher she has been and continues to be. My other problem with some of the negative reviews is that they try to pit Barbara against Linda Darty. While I have to agree that Linda's book is fascinating and informative, I don't think there isn't room enough for both books. Not only that, but Barbara's book talks more about a specific process and how to construct jewelry from it. The other is more of enameling in general. Both are great books! Why do people have to put one over the other?

Bravo to you, Andrew, for speaking out. I have no idea why people feel that the internet gives them the freedom to be asses. But I think there is hope when people like yourself are willing to stand up call them on their behaviour. Thank you!

I find Barbara to be a very generous member of the community - she has been more than helpful to me via her Painting with Fire group - generous in her praise and open with her sharing.
I bought her book, not because she urged me to, but because of the wonderful things others were saying about it.
I agree that a book review should be a REVIEW OF THE BOOK, not a personal attack on the author.
