The meet-up was enjoyable, but small. With the bad weather, only the locals came and we had to call it an early night to avoid the worst of the weather. We sat around the table and snacked on rice cakes (to represent the 10 bag of rice the main character brought with him into the wilderness), trail mix, perogies, and hummus with rice crackers. We had intended upon watching the movie based on the book, but unfortunately couldn't make it work due to increasingly inclement weather and decided to postpone that.
Here's a picture of Laurel (with her son), cradling a 10 pound bag of rice! This is one of the few provisions that he brought with him. I picked up a bag so that we could get a feel of what it was like to carry something like this for hundreds of miles.
This necklace was made by Laurel. I features a blend of vintage Czech glass and horn. She said it had the woodsy feel of Alaska.
This necklace was also made by Laurel! She strung up spent shotgun shells and wood beads. Part of the book discusses how the main character fed himself, including hunting his own food.
I made this. It'll eventually be a brooch. It is made of polymer clay and is a representation of Hedysarum alpinum. The roots and eventual seedpods become a major source of food. It turns out that ingesting the seeds while starving and undergoing extreme physical activity can result in bad times, including lethargy... not good when you've got to run around hunting and gathering!
I also carved this pendant. It features the leaves of the Hedysarum alpinum. I made a few and will eventually turn them into earrings!
Amy made a really cool piece, but I didn't get a picture of it. It featured a bright yellow bead to represent his car and a certain number of beads to represent how old he was and how long it has been since his tragic death.
But wait... there's more! The fun isn't over yet! Take a look at what these members of the Inspired by Reading Book Club made with "Into the Wild" in mind:

The work posted is so unique. Really like the bullet casing necklace.
I really like Laurel's two pieces... the shell casing one is really fun and unique! Andrew, your polymer flowers are very pretty... it will make a lovely pin. Glad to know I'm not the only one who had issues with Chris's choices and actions.
On a totally different note, that book cover for Geek Love is WAY different from the one I got from my library. If I had seen this one, I wouldn't have been confused as to what type of geek the book's title referenced!
I haven't read this book, but I watched about 2/3 or the film a couple of years ago. I had to stop as I couldn't bear it. Like you (although of course I do not have your personal experience to resonate with) I found his behaviour towards his sister very hard to watch. I am like an emotional sponge, and even when I think about the film now, I have to hold myself back from sitting down, putting my head in my hands and sobbing. What a waste of a life, and what a legacy to leave for those who loved him. I think it must have been a very good film but still, I wish I had never watched any of it!
Andrew- thanks for a great meet up! Your polymer work is fantastic and the colors are so vibrant!
Laurel - what fun pieces you made! The horn necklace really is amazingly done!
Amy- your necklace was very thought out and such a good job!
I read this book a number of years ago and don't remember having the reaction that many people did being angry with Chris. I did wonder a lot about his motives. It's interesting to hear other perspectives, especially based on person experiences.
Laurel's pieces are so interesting. I love the horn!
Andrew's pieces are beautiful - despite the hurtful nature of the story, you still focused on the beautiful (although perhaps poisonous!)
Amy's necklace sounds wonderful!
Great pieces as always! I love seeing what different and wonderful pieces we all make from the same inspiration! And I love the discussion of the books as well!
Rachel
I think I have hopped everywhere for this hop but here! Way to go everyone. This was a tough book that dealt with a lot of sadness and isolation, but everyone came up with some great pieces that I really think tell his story. I can't believe what a talented group we have!
And I certainly can't wait for next month. My book's cover definitely made me think of 'nerd' geeks too, definitely not circus geeks! So it will be a blog full of quirky pieces I'm sure. Have fun! Keep being inspired!!!!
