This series of ten painted collages titled, "The Night Birds" has been in the works for a long time now. It has been difficult for me to get back in the swing of things and keep a regimented studio practice. That's why these are perhaps some of the most important works I've made to date – they are me coming back to what I love. As with many of my pieces, I spent a lot of time building up the surfaces with several layers of woven collage and dozens of washes of paint. You might recognize some of my older work embedded in the pieces. I like my pieces to have a depth of soul, layered thickly with a network of personal histories that unfurl slowly under close examination.
I could write much more on what I've been looking at, what I've been thinking, where I've drawn inspiration, what the meanings and symbolisms are, and how they should be viewed... but instead, I'll leave the pictures to do the talking.
