Would You...

I was conversing with Kate McKinnon and threw out the idea of teaching a workshop together in the winter. The workshop would be broken down into three sections. The first section would be devoted to collage and creating personal imagery. The second section would be focused on metal clay. The third section would be about bridging the first two sections together. I think this could be a lot of fun and would be a great way to pick both of our brains. This is all hypothetical at this stage, but I wanted to see if there would be any interest for something like this. Most likely this would happen in Tucson, so I could escape the frozen north.

Kate's reputation as a teacher is indisputable and her working knowledge of the metal clay is proficient, educated, and thoughtful. I could go on and on about her experience, credentials, and expertise, but you're probably well aware of her career already. You might be wondering though what I might bring to the table. I've had years of experience creating, showing and selling my collages and paintings. My work can be found in private collections around the globe. I went to a prestigious art college in New York City and participated in several summer residency programs where I worked closely with some of the top names in the fine art world. I had the honor of studying with Cheryl Donegan, Tobi Kahn, Victoria Kann, Lynda Benglis, Sue Williams, Danica Phelps, Nancy Chunn, Stephen Westfall, and several other successful professional fine artists. I can offer invaluable resource lists for a variety of art supplies and materials like paint, adhesives, archiving products, and papers. I can even show you how to make some of your own. When I talk about collage, please erase the idea of dunce caps and scrap-booking ephemera. The collage section will focus on creating unique and personalized imagery specific to each individual artist. I've got a big bag of tricks and several techniques up my sleeve.

So... do you think that this is something you'd be interested in taking?

I've taken a class with Kate a while back, and you're right, she's a great teacher. And I admire your creative vision, Andrew, you two together would be a true dynamic duo! I wish you the best and hope it comes together for you both.

This proposed collaboration sounds very intriguing and unique. Wish I would be able to take it. I hope it all works out. Good luck.

Oh yeah. That is totally the type of class that I would look for. Much more than fundamentals it would focus on you being you and tapping into your inner creativity. If I didn't live so far from AZ I would consider going. But WI is wayyyy too cold in the winter to be doing that!
I have no doubt that you and Kate would make it work and it would be wildly successful.
Enjoy the day!

Hi Andrew

Although I know I would not be able to travel to take the class, the class sounds awesome - I came running over to read more about it as soon as I saw it pop up on the feeds! I'm sure it would be a winner should you move forth with it!

It sounds like an inspired course, Andrew. If only I could travel to Tuscon to take it!

I think it would be wonderful, Andrew; I have long admired your work, and your ability to create, from nothing, the imagery of your mind represented on paper, or in photographs. I can't imagine that we would have trouble filling a weekend like this. I want very much to do it! December or January sounds good to me.

What a dynamic duo! Kate is to be admired for her innovative work and her pluck! You are both insightful and passionate about art - perfect mix. I too live in the East - maybe a successful West Coast foray will lead to an East Coast session?

Andrew,
That sounds wonderful. Since I live in the sunny Southwest, it would be very doable for me!

If only you could come to Chicago in the spring time. I know quite a few people here who would want to take a Kate class. And adding your subject would make for an interesting learning experience.

Another thought - your class subject would be a wonderful addition at the major shows. Maybe Bead and Button next year? With your following and credentials you'd have no problem filling classes. I'd even be willing to be your classroom assistant!!

The Chicago area is doable for me. I love Chicago when it's not too cold or too hot. I don't know if Kate would be willing to or not. But I'll see her this week and ask. I suppose it depends on how our Tucson class goes.

Normally I'm too busy working the booth to be able to teach. But that's definitely an option. I don't know if we'd be able to do the three part class with Kate as suggested earlier though.
